“Without ballet schools, there would be no ballet companies.”

Sir David Bintley CBE

Elmhurst Ballet School is a registered charity. Our mission as a school and charity is to prepare young people from all backgrounds to become Exceptional Dancers and Exceptional People. We believe that world-class ballet training should never be limited by financial circumstances. With your support, we can ensure that every talented and passionate young dancer has the chance to thrive at Elmhurst.

Our Funders

Elmhurst is proud to receive vital backing from:

  • Department for Education through the Music and Dance Scheme (MDS), which supports the training of selected Lower School students.
  • Education and Skills Funding Agency through the Dance and Drama Award (DaDA), which helps cover the direct training costs for eligible Upper School students.

Alongside this government support, we are deeply thankful to the trusts and foundations, philanthropists, businesses, and membership groups who so generously sustain our charitable mission.

It costs over £200,000 to train a dancer through eight years at Elmhurst. More than 85% of our students need financial assistance, and almost a quarter would qualify for free school meals in mainstream education.

Despite our charitable status and over 50% of our funding coming from the government, as an independent specialist school, Elmhurst is now subject to VAT on all student fees, including those supported by bursaries, grants and government funded schemes. This has left the school facing unprecedented financial challenges. We need your help to protect the future of affordable, accessible, world-class dance training.

Your support will

  • Make ballet truly accessible by supporting students in need.
  • Keep our training fresh and relevant through commission new choreography and working with guest artists.
  • Give young dancers the vital experience of performing before live audiences.
  • Extend our Ballet and Beyond outreach programme, taking ballet into schools and communities.
  • Maintain and develop our extraordinary purpose-built campus and thriving community theatre.
  • Protect Elmhurst’s unique ethos and legacy of excellence for the next 100 years.

There are many ways of supporting Elmhurst to nurture our Exceptional Dancers and Exceptional People.

If you plan to leave Elmhurst a gift or have kindly remembered us in your Will, please let us know so that we can thank you during your lifetime.

Your support of Elmhurst Ballet School means that you are making a commitment towards the future of British ballet; supporting the continuity of ballet training provision into the future, from providing support for students who are struggling with the costs of their training to maintaining and improving the infrastructure of the school.

There are several ways to leave a gift in your Will to or create a living legacy to benefit Elmhurst Ballet School. Whatever the size or circumstance, your gift can have a transformative impact.

You can make a gift of anything remaining once any payments and cash gifts have been made; the whole of, or a share of your estate; a specific sum of money; a particular item such as a work of art or stocks and shares; or you can allocate all or part of your estate to go to a loved one first, and once that person has passed away, the remainder would pass to Elmhurst.

Inheritance tax is subject to change, and we advise discussing specific wording with your solicitor. We can support you with these conversations.
